A hysterectomy is an operation for removal of the womb. Hysterectomies may or may not be required for patients having conditions such as excessive bleeding, rupture of the womb, massive infection, painful and bleeding fibroids, or severe prolapse of the uterus.
The vagina normally contains a large number of organisms (germs) called lactobacillus (or acidophilus). Vaginal infections occur when other organisms grow and change the normal balance of organisms in the vagina.
Vaginal dryness is a common condition that affects many women at some stage in their lives. In spite of the fact that it can cause considerable discomfort and distress and is easy to diagnose and treat, few women recognize it as a medical problem and seek treatment for it.
Abnormal Uterine Bleeding or Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding as it is sometimes called, is a problem that often affects women as they start to get periods and as they get closer to menopause, although any woman who menstruates can experience it.
Fibroids, also called myomas, are concentric growth of muscles in the wall of uterus and are almost always non-cancerous. Doctors call these benign (meaning harmless) growths. Although fibroids tend to run in families, no one really knows why some women have them and others do not.
Endometriosis is a condition wherein the tissues that form the lining of the uterus are found growing in other parts of the body. It is a very painful condition and can affect women of all ages.
Menopause is the point in your life when your menstrual periods stop permanently. It marks the end of your childbearing years. This happens because as you age, your ovaries stop making enough of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone.
Heavy bleeding during menstruation or periods, as it is usually referred, in medical terms is called menorrhagia. In this condition more than an average amount of blood is lost during menstruation.
Menopause is that phase when permanent cessation of menstruation occurs. This puts an end to the reproductive functioning, as there is a gradual decline in the functioning of the ovaries. This phase strikes women who are around the age of 45 or more.
Hot flashes as the name suggest are sudden flushes of heat. Most women who are going through menopause experience hot flashes on and off; they are also considered to be the early signs of menopause.
Dilatation means stretching the opening of the cervix with special instruments to make it wider. Once the opening of the cervix is enlarged, another instrument, 'curette' is inserted into the uterus to loosen and remove the lining of the uterus. This procedure is known as curettage.
