Anemia is a condition where the red blood cells of a person drop below normal. Generally, decreased red blood cell production, increased red blood cell destruction or blood loss are the mechanisms responsible for anemia. Treatment depends on the etiology or the specific cause.
Thalassemia: Anemia Wherein Iron Supplements Are Contraindicated
Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder, which really has no cure yet. However, understanding thalassemia may help in curtailing its expression and reducing the morbidity (illness due to the disease), mortality (death due to the disease) and - more importantly - the cost and burden of treatment.
Anemia is discovered when a blood test shows low hemoglobin. The diagnosis of the cause starts with a thorough exam of the patient and then a couple of very simple tests: peripheral blood smear exam under the microscope and a reticulocyte count blood test. A bone marrow biopsy is required in rare cases when the reticulocyte count is very low and no simple cause can be seen on routine blood tests.
