Breast augmentation using silicone implants has become one of the commonest cosmetic surgery procedures in recent times.

It is a fairly simple operation which can be done under general or local anesthesia, and the woman can go home within a few hours of the surgery with an almost magical transformation, physically as well as mentally. The psychological implications of breast augmentation can often be more complicated than one realizes. Many a woman reaching maturity with a flat chest, or who has lost the youthful breast contour feels - either consciously or subconsciously - that femininity and appeal have been lost. This may make for unsatisfactory relationships with men.

This attitude makes her self-conscious and is reflected in a reluctance to show and respond to affection, and is often interpreted as frigidity. It may indicate to her husband or partner a lack of love or normal sexual response.

Problems related to a flat "unfeminine" chest are not confined to the bedroom, however. The woman who feels inadequate in one area may have a carry-over of this feeling of in adequacy to many other aspects of her life. Most women report that following the breast augmentation procedure, they have become much more adequate in their jobs and in meeting the public.

Often after the breast augmentation procedure, the patient tells the surgeon that she has accomplished a great deal for her personality and confidence in addition to making her feel more adequate sexually. The problem of self image is clearly a real one.
