Tuberculosis (TB)

 

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease usually affecting the lungs and sometimes other parts of the body.

Causes

  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis
  • Breathing air contaminated by infected sputum

Symptoms

  • Chest pain
  • Prolonged cough
  • Blood in cough
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Night sweats
  • Appetite loss
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue or weakness

Treatment

Treatment is with one or more of following antibiotics over a period of 6 to 12 months:

  • Isoniazid
  • Rifampin
  • Ethambutol
  • Pyrazinamide

Prevention

  • Avoiding exposure to infected air
