Toxoplasmosis

 

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection.

Causes

  • Parasite called Toxoplasma gondii
  • Contact with cats or their feces
  • Consuming raw or undercooked meat
  • Infected mother to the unborn child

Symptoms

Symptoms are usually absent or mild in healthy adults. They include:

  • Muscle pain
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Fever

In infants or immunocompromised adults:

  • Brain damage
  • Eye damage
  • Organ damage

Treatment

Healthy individuals usually do not require treatment. In other cases it includes:

  • Antimalarial medication
  • Antibiotics

Prevention

  • Wash hands with soap after handling cats and their feces
  • Wash hands with soap after gardening or after touching manure
  • Wash raw fruits and vegetables before consumption
  • Store and handle raw meat separately and appropriately
  • Wash vessels and surfaces in touch with raw meat with soap
  • Cook meat thoroughly before consumption
