Spondylolisthesis

 

Spondylolisthesis is a condition where a vertebra is displaced forward in comparison to the one below it.

Causes

  • Congenital defect
  • Fractures
  • Degeneration due to age or conditions like arthritis
  • Overuse in contact sports, gymnastics etc.
  • Tumors
  • Previous back surgery

Symptoms

Symptoms may not be present in mild cases. They may include:

  • Lower back pain and stiffness
  • Tight hamstring muscle
  • Pain in the buttocks, thighs or legs
  • Protruding abdomen
  • Waddling gait

Treatment

Treatment may not be required when symptoms are not present. Otherwise, it may include:

  • Rest
  • Physical therapy
  • Medication like NSAIDs, analgesics or steroids
  • Lumbar traction
  • Epidural steroid injection
  • Orthotic devices like braces
  • Surgery

Prevention

  • Maintain a correct posture
  • Use correct technique to lift heavy objects
  • Regular stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
