Retinoblastoma

 

Retinoblastoma is a cancer that develops in the retina of one or both eyes in children below 5 years of age.

Causes

  • Gene mutation
  • Heredity

Symptoms

  • White or yellow pupil in a  photograph taken with flash
  • Redness of eye
  • Eye irritation
  • Crossed eyes or strabismus
  • Poor vision
  • Delayed development

Treatment
If detected early, retinoblastoma can be cured. Treatment varies from patient to patient and includes:

  • Chemotherapy
  • External beam radiotherapy
  • Cryotherapy
  • Laser therapy
  • Plaque radiation
  • Enucleation

Prevention
There is no way to prevent retinoblastoma.
