Rabies

 

Rabies is a viral disease of mammals affecting the central nervous system causing inflammation of the brain and death if untreated.

Causes

  • Virus
  • Saliva of the infected animal
  • Bite or scratch from an infected animal

Symptoms

  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Pain
  • Inability to swallow
  • Partial paralysis
  • Lethargy
  • Drooling
  • Confusion
  • Aggression
  • Uncontrolled excitement
  • Paranoia
  • Hydrophobia
  • Delirium
  • Death due to respiratory insufficiency

Treatment
Treatment should not be delayed and done at the earliest. It includes:

  • Immediately washing the wound or point of contact with soap and water
  • Washing the eyes, nose and mouth with water
  • Post exposure vaccine within the first ten days
  • Rabies immune globulin (RIG)

Prevention

  • Vaccines for both animals and humans
