Posterior Urethral Valve

 

Posterior urethral valve is a congenital condition where an abnormal membrane obstructs the male urethra.

Causes

  • Defect in fetal development

Symptoms

  • Enlarged bladder
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Frequent urination
  • Weak urine stream
  • Bed wetting
  • Poor weight gain

Treatment

  • Antibiotics
  • Intravenous fluids
  • Catheter to drain the urine
  • Removal of obstructing valves through urethra
  • Vesicostomy
  • Pyelostomy

Prevention

There is no way to prevent this condition.
