Poliomyelitis

 

Poliomyelitis or polio is an infectious viral disease that can affect the nerves and lead to paralysis.

Causes

  • Poliovirus
  • Food and water contaminated by infected feces
  • Infected saliva
  • Infected mucous

Symptoms

Polio can be asymptomatic in many cases. Symptoms, if present, depend on the type of polio and may include:

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort and pain
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Pain and stiffness in the neck, back and limbs
  • Weakness in the muscles
  • Irritability
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Paralysis

Treatment

There is no cure for polio but symptoms may be controlled by:

  • Pain killers
  • Heating pads
  • Physical therapy
  • Braces
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Artificial ventilation

  • Polio vaccine
