Phimosis

 

Phimosis is a condition where the foreskin cannot be retracted freely over the head of the penis.

Causes

  • Poor hygiene
  • Infection like balantis
  • Certain medical conditions like diabetes

Symptoms

  • Inability to retract the foreskin
  • Ballooning of the foreskin during urination
  • Thin urinary stream
  • A white ring around the opening of the foreskin
  • Frequent urinary tract infections

Treatment

Non retractable foreskin in young children is normal and does not need treatment. In adults, treatment may include:

  • Topical corticosteroids
  • Manual stretching by a physician
  • Preputial plasty
  • Circumcision in cases where other treatments fail

Prevention

  • Maintaining good personal hygiene
  • Avoid urinary tract infections
  • Avoid sexually transmitted diseases
