Pemphigus

 

Pemphigus is an autoimmune disorder causing blisters on the skin or mucous membranes.

Causes

  • Autoimmune reaction

Symptoms

Symptoms vary according to the type of pemphigus and may include:

  • Painful blisters in the mouth or mucous membranes of the genitals
  • Itchy and crusty blisters on the scalp, face, and upper body
  • Painful sores on the lips, mouth, and esophagus
  • Skin lesions
  • Breathing problems

Treatment

There is no cure for this disease but it can be controlled by:

  • Corticosteroids
  • Immunosuppressants
  • Intravenous fluids and electrolytes
  • Plasmapheresis

Prevention

There is no prevention for pemphigus.
