Ovarian Cancer


Ovarian cancer is the growth of cancerous cells in the ovary.

Causes are not known always but risk factors include:

  • Family history of cancer, especially gynecological cancer
  • Personal history of cancer
  • Menopause
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Not having children

Symptoms are not specific and may include:

  • Pelvic or abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Back pain
  • Bloating
  • Fluid build up in the abdomen
  • Abdominal mass
  • Nausea or indigestion
  • Increased urgency or frequency of urination
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Fatigue
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Weight loss


  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Sometimes, radiation

There is no specific prevention but risk may be reduced by:

  • Using oral contraceptives
  • Having atleast one child
  • Breastfeeding
  • Tubal ligation
  • Hysterectomy
