Osteoporosis

 

Osteoporosis is condition causing fragile bones due to lack of bone density and mass.

Causes

  • Lack of estrogen in women especially after menopause
  • Lack of androgen in men
  • Lack of calcium and vitamin D intake
  • Lack of weight bearing exercise
  • Overuse of corticosteroids
  • Thyroid problems
  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Heredity

Symptoms
Osteoporosis may not cause symptoms initially. When symptoms appear, they may include:

  • Pin in the bones
  • Stooped posture
  • Fractures
  • Loss of height

Treatment

  • Reducing alcohol intake and quitting smoking
  • Regular exercise
  • Diet rich in calcium and vitamin D
  • Medications like bisphosphonates to increase bone density
  • Hormone therapy

Prevention

  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol
