Osteoarthritis

 

Osteoarthritis or degenerative arthritis is a type of arthritis causing inflammation and breakdown of the joints and cartilage.

Causes
Causes are not known always but some of the risk factors include:

  • Old age
  • Overweight
  • Trauma or injury
  • Medical conditions like gout, diabetes, etc.
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Genetics

Symptoms

  • Joint pain and tenderness
  • Stiffness
  • Creaking sound while moving the joint

Treatment

  • Resting the joint
  • Physical therapy and light exercise
  • Weight loss
  • Heat and cold packs
  • Support devices like braces, cane or walker
  • Topical or oral medication to reduce inflammation and pain
  • Corticosteroid injections into the joints
  • Surgery to realign or fuse the bones
  • Partial or complete joint replacement

Prevention
There no specific prevention but risk can be reduced by:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Avoiding wear and tear of joints
  • Avoiding injury to joints
  • Exercising regularly
