Mumps

 

Mumps is a viral disease affecting mainly the parotid or salivary glands.

Causes

  • Mumps virus
  • Breathing contaminated saliva
  • Sharing utensils with an infected person

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain of the salivary glands
  • Swelling of one or both testes
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Weakness

Treatment
There is no specific treatment and it gets cured on its own. Symptoms can be managed with the help of:

  • Ice or heat packs to relieve inflammation
  • Rest
  • Plenty of fluid intake
  • Medication for pain and fever

  • Mumps vaccine
