Molluscum Contagiosum

 

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral infection of the skin.

Causes

  • Molluscum virus
  • Skin to skin contact
  • Sexual contact
  • Contact with infected objects and clothing

Symptoms
Symptoms include growths on the skin having following characteristics:

  • Flesh or pink color
  • Dome shape
  • Pearly appearance
  • Dimpled center

Treatment
Molluscum contagiosum is harmless and the growths go away within a few months to few years without any treatment. When treatment is given, it may include:

  • Topical medication
  • Scraping the growths with a curette
  • Cryotherapy
  • Electrocautery
  • Laser therapy

Prevention

  • Avoid sharing towels and other personal things
  • Avoid contact with infected people
