Lung Cancer

 

Lung cancer is the uncontrolled production of cells in the lung tissues. It can develop due to spread of cancer from some other part of the body and can also spread outside the lungs.

Causes

  • Tobacco smoke
  • Genetic factors
  • Radon gas
  • Asbestos
  • Air pollution
  • Viral infection

Symptoms 
Symptoms develop only in the advanced stage. They include:

  • Persistent cough,  sometimes with blood
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Loss of weight
  • Weakness
  • Hoarse voice
  • Repeated respiratory disorders

Treatment
Cancer treatment varies from person to person and depends on type and stage of the cancer. It includes one or more of the following options:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Targeted drug therapy

Prevention
Risk of developing lung cancer can be reduced by:

  • Avoiding smoking
  • Avoiding exposure to radon and asbestos
  • Avoiding toxins
  • Avoiding excessive alcohol
  • Balanced diet
  • Regular exercise
