Leptospirosis

 

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection affecting both animals and humans.

Causes

  • Bacteria called Leptospira interrogans
  • Contact with water, food or soil contaminated with urine of infected animal
  • Consuming food or water contaminated by urine of infected animal

Symptoms

  • High fever and chills
  • Headache
  • Muscle ache
  • Red eyes
  • Rash
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Jaundice

Treatment

  • Oral antibiotics
  • Intravenous antibiotics in severe cases

Prevention

  • Avoid contact with contaminated water and soil
  • Use water proof boots during activities and sports involving wading in contaminated water
