Leprosy

 

Leprosy is a bacterial infection affecting the skin, nerves and mucous membranes leading to disfiguring sores.

Causes

  • Bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae
  • Nasal discharge of  infected person
  • Prolonged close contact with infected person

Symptoms

  • Skin lesions and nodules
  • Spot on the skin which is darker or lighter than normal skin
  • Loss of sensation or numbness on the spot
  • Loss of hair on the spot
  • Loss of blinking reflex and blindness
  • Chronically stuffy nose
  • Nose collapse

Treatment
Early treatment can prevent permanent damage and includes:

  • Multiple drug therapy (MDT) with a combination of dapsone, rifampin and clofazimine

Prevention

  • Avoid contact with infected people who are not under treatment
