Knee Sprain

 

Knee sprain is a condition where any of the four ligaments of the knee get stretched or torn.

Causes

  • Twisting of the knee
  • Hyperextension of the knee
  • Direct blow to the knee
  • Sudden or abrupt stopping while running

Symptoms
Symptoms differ according to the ligament affected and may include:

  • Pop sound
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Knee instability
  • Loss of movement

Treatment
In minor sprains treatment is conservative and includes:

  • Resting
  • Ice packs
  • Elastic bandage
  • Keeping the knee elevated
  • Bracing
  • NSAIDs to relieve pain and swelling
  • Physical therapy

In severe sprains surgery may be required to repair the ligament.

Prevention

  • Warm up before work outs or strenuous physical activities
  • Avoid sudden movements or twisting of knees
  • Follow correct techniques while working out or playing sports
  • Do regular stretching exercises
