Kidney Cancer


Kidney cancer or Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) is the growth of malignant cells in the tiny tubes in the kidney that filter blood and remove waste products.

Causes for this cancer are not known.


Symptoms may not be present always. If present they include:

  • Blood in urine
  • Lump in abdomen
  • Dull pain in the side
  • Appetite loss
  • Weight loss
  • Edema
  • Fatigue
  • Fever


  • Surgery to remove the cancerous cells or the entire kidney or the entire kidney alongwith nearby tissues
  • Arterial embolization to block the blood flow to kidney to shrink the tumor
  • Radiation therapy to destroy the cancer cells
  • Chemotherapy to destroy cancer cells with help of drugs
  • Biological therapy to destroy cancer cells by inducing laboratory made substances which are produced by the immune system to fight infection

There is no prevention for kidney cancer but risk can be reduced by:

  • Avoiding smoking
  • Avoiding exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Maintaining healthy weight
  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Exercising regularly
