Kaposi's Sarcoma (KS)

 

Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is a cancerous tumor found on the skin or mucous membranes lining the mouth, nose, and anus.

Causes

  • Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) or Kaposi’s sarcoma associated herpes virus (KSHV)
  • Sexual contact with an infected person
  • Contact with saliva of infected person
  • Infected blood transfusions
  • Organ transplant
  • Infection from mother to unborn child

Symptoms

  • Red, purple, brown or black skin lesions
  • Pain
  • Bleeding, if spread to digestive tract
  • Difficulty in breathing, if spread to lungs

Treatment
There is no cure for KS but symptoms can be managed by:

  • Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)
  • Cryotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy

Prevention

  • Practice safe sex
