Ingrown Nail

 

Ingrown nail is a condition where the nail digs into one or both sides of the nail bed causing pain and swelling.

Causes

  • Cutting the nail too short
  • Rounding of the corners of the nail
  • Ill-fitting, tight or narrow footwear
  • Trauma to the nail
  • Hereditary tendency

Symptoms

  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Pus
  • Sensitivity to pressure

Treatment

  • Oral or topical antibiotics to fight infection
  • Surgery to remove the ingrown nail partially or completely

Prevention

  • Cut the nails straight and avoid rounding the edges
  • Avoid cutting the nails too short
  • Avoid ill-fitting shoes
