Infectious Arthritis

 

Infectious arthritis or septic arthritis is infection of one or more joints in the body.

Causes

  • Bacteria
  • Virus
  • Fungi
  • Infection spread from another infected part of body through blood stream
  • Surgery
  • Injections
  • Trauma

Symptoms

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation
  • Stiffness
  • Fever
  • Chills

Treatment
Treatment needs to start immediately and includes:

  • Intravenous antibiotics
  • Oral antibiotics
  • NSAIDs
  • Draining the infected fluid with a needle or arthroscopy

Prevention

  • Practicing safe sex
  • Avoiding injected drugs
  • Avoiding infections by practicing good hygiene
  • Prompt treatment of gonorrhea infection
