Hypothyroidism is a condition caused by deficiency of thyroid hormone which may affect various body functions and lead to a slow metabolism.

Causes

  • Autoimmune disease
  • Damaged thyroid cells
  • Surgical removal of a part of the thyroid like in thyroid cancer
  • Absence of thyroid gland
  • Problem in the pituitary gland
  • Iodine deficiency
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain medication

Symptoms

  • Weakness
  • Dry itchy skin
  • Hair loss
  • Brittle nails
  • Cold intolerance
  • Low body temperature
  • Muscle cramps
  • Joint pains
  • Weight gain
  • Difficulty in reducing weight
  • Constipation
  • Abnormal menstrual cycles
  • Hoarse voice
  • Memory loss
  • Depression
  • Mood swings
  • Lack of sex drive

Treatment
Typically, hypothyroidism is treated by lifelong prescription of thyroid hormone in the form of oral medication.

Prevention
There is no way to prevent hypothyroidism.
