Hyperthyroidism

 

Hyperthyroidism is a condition caused by over production of thyroid hormones leading to increased metabolism.

Causes

  • Grave’s disease
  • Thyroid nodules
  • Thyroiditis (inflammation of thyroid)
  • Over-treatment of hypothyroidism

Symptoms

  • Heat  intolerance
  • High blood pressure
  • Palpitation
  • Nervousness
  • Sweating
  • Insomnia
  • Trembling hands
  • Weakness
  • Weight loss
  • Increased appetite
  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Light or absent menstruation
  • Swelling at the base of the neck
  • Protruding eyes

Treatment

  • Radioactive iodine
  • Anti-thyroid medications
  • Beta blockers
  • Surgery (thyroidectomy)

Prevention
There is no prevention for hyperthyroidism.
