Hypercholesterolemia

 

Hypercholesterolemia happens with high levels of cholesterol in the blood. It can harden and narrow blood vessels leading to heart attack and stroke.

Causes

  • Heredity
  • Advancing age
  • Sedentary lifestyles
  • Diets high in saturated fats
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Certain diseases like diabetes, kidney disorder or liver disorder

Symptoms
 Symptoms for high cholesterol are normally not visible and may show up only in the advanced stages in the form of:

  • Xanthomas (fat deposits in the tendons and skin)
  • Xanthelasmas (deposits on the eyelids)
  • Enlarged liver and spleen
  • Chest pain or heart attack
  • Stroke

Treatment
Treatment may differ from person to person. It may include:

  • Healthy diet
  • Exercise
  • Weight loss
  • Medications
  • Cholesterol lowering drugs like statins

Prevention

  • Maintaining appropriate weight
  • Low fat diet
  • Regular exercise
