Hydronephrosis

 

Hydronephrosis is the stretching and swelling of one or both kidneys due to urine backup.

Causes

  • Blockage in the urinary tract
  • Congenital defect
  • Downward shifting of kidney
  • Tumor
  • Stones
  • Injury
  • Infection
  • Enlarged prostrate gland
  • Nerve or muscle disorder
  • Pregnancy

Symptoms

  • Pain or discomfort in the flank
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Increased urinary frequency and urgency
  • Painful urination
  • Kidney failure

Treatment

  • Draining out the blocked urine
  • Antibiotics to prevent kidney infections
  • Surgery to remove blockage

Prevention

  • Prompt treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Prompt treatment of disorders causing hydronephrosis
