Herniated Disk

 

Herniated or slipped disk is a condition when the spongy disks between the spinal vertebra slip out of their normal position or rupture causing pressure on the nerves.

Causes

  • Wear and tear with aging
  • Repetitive straining of the spine
  • Injury to the spine
  • Excessive weight

Symptoms

  • Radiating pain in the lower back or neck and shoulders
  • Pain that gets better with rest
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Problem in urinating or bowel movements

Treatment
Conservative treatment usually helps to cure the problem and may include:

  • Rest
  • Ice packs or heat application
  • Pain and anti inflammatory medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Sometimes, surgery

Prevention

  • Regular exercise
  • Good posture
  • Healthy weight
  • Squat while lifting heavy weights
  • Avoid sleeping on the stomach
Avoid smoking
