Hematuria
 

Hematuria is the presence of blood in urine which can be either visible by eye or seen only microscopically.

Causes

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Urinary tract obstructions
  • Bladder or kidney stones
  • Bladder or kidney tumors
  • Kidney disease or inflammation
  • Trauma to kidney
  • Cancer
  • Enlarged prostrate
  • Certain disorders like sickle cell anemia or Alport syndrome
  • Certain medications
  • Excessive exercise

Symptoms
In microscopic hematuria, no symptoms may be present. Otherwise symptoms may include:

  • Pink or dark colored urine

Treatment
When the cause is not serious, treatment may not be required. In other cases, treatment is aimed at treating the underlying cause.

Prevention
There is no way to prevent hematuria but risks can be reduced by:

  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Avoiding strenuous exercises
Promptly treating urinary tract infections
