Head Injury

 
Head injury is trauma to the scalp, skull or brain.

Causes
  • Falls
  • Accidents

Symptoms
Symptoms vary according to the severity and type of injury. They may include:

  • Swelling or bump
  • Bleeding
  • Headache
  • Seizures
  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Unusual behavior
  • Slurred speech
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stiff neck
  • Unequal pupils
  • Loss of consciousness

Treatment
Minor injuries which do not show any severe symptoms may not require treatment and get cured on their own. Severe injuries can be fatal and require immediate first aid and professional medical help. First aid may include:

  • Keeping the person still to prevent damage to spine
  • Applying a clean cloth to the wound to stop bleeding
  • Gently turning the person’s entire body and head on the side if vomiting to prevent choking and injury to spine

Prevention

  • Use  protective gear like helmets and seat belts
  • Use car seats while travelling with babies
  • Keep the house and work area clutter free to avoid falls
  • Obey traffic rules
