Gonorrhea

 

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that can affect the reproductive tract, urethra, anus, mouth, throat or eyes of both men and women.

Causes

  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria
  • Sexual contact (oral, vaginal, anal) with an infected person
  • Infection from an infected mother to the baby during vaginal childbirth

Symptoms
Symptoms can be absent sometimes but if present, they may include:

  • Vaginal or penile discharge
  • Difficulty  or pain in urinating
  • Abnormal bleeding between periods
  • Vaginal irritation
  • Bleeding after sexual intercourse
  • Abdominal pain and cramps
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Scrotal pain
  • Scrotal swelling
  • Anal itching
  • Anal soreness
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Irritation of the eyes in newborns

Treatment

  • Antibiotic medication

Prevention

  • Avoiding sexual contact with infected people
