Gestational Diabetes

 

Gestational diabetes is a kind of diabetes that develops during pregnancy and usually goes away after child birth.

Causes

  • Hormones produced during pregnancy

Symptoms
There are no symptoms in most cases but if present they may include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Bladder infections
  • Yeast infections
  • Fatigue

Treatment

  • Planned meals as per each patient’s requirements
  • Regular exercise within safe levels
  • Medications in cases where diet and exercise do not help

Prevention
Not much can be done to prevent gestational diabetes although risk may be reduced by:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Regular physical activity
