Filaria or Filariasis

 

Filaria or filariasis is condition affecting the lymphatic system, the fat layer of the skin or the serous cavity in the abdomen.

Causes

  • Filarial nematode worms spread by mosquito bites

Symptoms
Symptoms depend on the affected area. They may include:

  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Rashes
  • Skin pigmentation
  • Swelling
  • Elephantiasis (extreme swelling especially of legs and genitals)
  • River blindness

Treatment

  • Albendazole combined with ivermectin
  • Albendazole combined with diethylcarbamazine

Prevention

  • Avoid mosquito bites
  • Yearly dose of preventive medication in case of filaria prone areas
