Female Infertility

 

Female infertility refers to the inability in a woman to conceive or maintain pregnancy.

Causes

  • Inability to ovulate
  • Excessive weight loss
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
  • Damaged or blocked fallopian tubes
  • Endometriosis
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Early menopause
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Pelvic adhesions

Symptoms
Symptoms may not be present always. If present they may include:

  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Heavy menstrual periods
  • Absent menstrual periods
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Painful intercourse
  • Pelvic pain
  • Recurring urinary tract infections
  • Recurring sexually transmitted diseases
  • Recurring yeast infections
  • Excessive hair growth or facial hair
  • Chronic acne
  • Oily skin
  • Weight gain or loss

Treatment

  • Fertility drugs or hormone therapy to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs
  • Surgery to clear blockages, adhesions, fibroids etc.
  • Assisted reproductive technologies such as intrauterine insemination, in vitro fertilization etc.

Prevention

  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol
  • Avoid excessive consumption of caffeine
  • Avoid excessive stress
  • Avoid STDs
  • Avoid excessive exercising
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Promptly treat STDs
