Fanconi Syndrome

 

Fanconi syndrome is a disorder where the kidney tubes are unable to reabsorb certain substances into the blood stream and release them into the urine.

Causes

  • Genetics defects such as cystinosis, fructose intolerance, galactosemia, glycogen storage disease, Lowe’s disease or Wilson’s disease
  • Certain conditions like multiple myeloma, primary amyloidosis etc.
  • Heavy metals such as lead, mercury or cadmium
  • Certain medications
  • Kidney transplant

Symptoms

  • Excessive urination
  • Excessive thirst and dehydration
  • Bone problems like rickets, osteomalacia, fractures and pain
  • Failure to grow
  • Excessively acidic blood
  • High levels of protein, glucose, bicarbonate, phosphates, uric acid, potassium and sodium in the urine

Treatment

  • Curing the underlying causes or disease
  • Sodium bicarbonate to reduce acidity of blood
  • Supplements such as vitamin D, phosphate, potassium etc
  • Rarely, kidney transplant

Prevention

  • Avoid exposure to heavy metals
  • Appropriate treatment of health conditions leading to the syndrome
