Encephalitis

 

Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain.
Causes

  • Viral infections such as chickenpox, measles, mumps, rabies, etc
  • Bacterial infection such as meningitis, lyme disease
  • Insects like mosquitoes and ticks

Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Weakness
  • Seizures
  • Stiffness
  • Disorientation
  • Photophobia
  • Drowsiness
  • Coma

Treatment
Not all types of encephalitis can be treated. Treatment depends on the cause. It includes:

  • Antiviral drugs for viral encephaltis
  • Antibiotics for bacterial encephalitis
  • Corticosteroids to reduce swelling in the brain
  • Anticonvulsants for seizures

Prevention

  • Proper immunization during childhood
  • Avoid mosquito bites
  • Keep the pets tick free
