Ehlers Danlos syndrome is a group of disorders that affect the connective tissues that support the skin, bones, muscles and blood vessels.
Causes
Symptoms
Symptoms vary according to the type of disorder. They include:
- Extremely loose joints
- Joint dislocations
- Extreme elasticity in the skin
- Smooth and velvety skin
- Thin or translucent skin
- Easy bruising
- Easily damaged blood vessels
- Poor wound healing
- Muscle weakness
- Rupture of internal organs
- Vision problems
Treatment
There is no cure for this syndrome and treatment depends on the symptoms. It may include:
- Physical therapy to strengthen muscles
- Bracing to support unstable joints
- Rarely, surgery to treat dislocated joints or other symptoms
Prevention
There is no way to prevent this syndrome.
