Down Syndrome

 

Down syndrome is a condition which causes mental and physical developmental delays in a child.

Causes

  • An  extra chromosome 21 (partial or complete)

Symptoms

  • Flat face
  • Upward slanting eyes
  • Small ears
  • Protruding tongue
  • A single crease across the palms
  • Lack of muscle tone
  • White spots on the iris
  • Congenital heart defects
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Mild to moderate mental retardation
  • Delay in reaching developmental milestones

Treatment
There is no cure for Down syndrome but early intervention can improve the quality of life. It can be done through:

  • Speech therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Special education

Prevention
There is no way to prevent Down syndrome.
