Down syndrome is a condition which causes mental and physical developmental delays in a child.
Causes
- An extra chromosome 21 (partial or complete)
Symptoms
- Flat face
- Upward slanting eyes
- Small ears
- Protruding tongue
- A single crease across the palms
- Lack of muscle tone
- White spots on the iris
- Congenital heart defects
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Mild to moderate mental retardation
- Delay in reaching developmental milestones
Treatment
There is no cure for Down syndrome but early intervention can improve the quality of life. It can be done through:
- Speech therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Physical therapy
- Special education
Prevention
There is no way to prevent Down syndrome. |
