Dental Caries

 

Tooth decay or dental caries are damage in the form of cavities or holes caused to the tooth structure.

Causes

  • Streptococcus mutans bacteria
  • Lactobacilli bacteria

Symptoms

  • Chalky white spot on the tooth that may turn brown
  • Hole or cavity in the tooth
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods
  • Pain
  • Bad breath
  • Tooth loss

Treatment

  • Tooth fillings to restore mild decay
  • Crowns or caps for extensive decay
  • Tooth extraction

Prevention

  • Daily brushing and flossing
  • Brushing or rinsing after meals
  • Avoid feeding sleeping infants
  • Avoiding sticky and sweet foods as snacks
  • Dental sealants
  • Topical fluoride in form of toothpaste etc.
