Croup

 

Croup refers to respiratory conditions causing inflammation in the airways of children between 3 months and 6 years of age.

Causes

  • Virus
  • Sometimes, bacteria

Symptoms

  • Harsh barking cough
  • Stridor or whistling sound on inhalation
  • Hoarseness
  • Fever
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Difficulty in breathing

Treatment
Generally, croup gets cured on its own in a few days. In severe cases and breathing difficulty treatment may include:

  • Inhaling moist air
  • Medications such as steroids to reduce inflammation of the airways

Prevention

  • Avoiding contact with infected children
  • Washing hands often
