Coma
Coma is a state of deep unconsciousness. Coma is not a disease condition. It is a condition that is reactive to a medical situation.
Causes
There can be many different causes for coma. They include:
- Head trauma
- Brain infection
- Lack of oxygen
- Stroke
- Intoxication
- Central nervous system abnormalities
- Diabetes
Symptoms
- Deep sleep which cannot be broken
- No response to pain or light
- No reaction to the environment
- No voluntary actions
Treatment
Coma is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment. It may include:
- Supportive care for breathing
- IV fluids and medication
- Treatment of underlying condition
- Hyperventilation, diuretics or surgery to reduce brain swelling
