Colorectal Cancer

 

Colorectal cancer is the cancer of the colon or rectum.

Causes
There are no known causes for colorectal cancer but the risk factors include:

  • Age over 50 years
  • Heredity
  • Polyps in the colon or rectum
  • High fat diet
  • Ulcerative colitis

Symptoms

  • Change in bowel habits
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Feeling of incomplete emptying of bowel
  • Narrow stools
  • Bloody stools
  • Stools with mucous
  • Black stools
  • Persistent abdominal discomfort like  cramps, pain or bloating
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Anemia
  • Weakness

Treatment
Treatment varies from patient to patient. It includes:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy

Prevention

  • Regular screening after the age of 50
  • Low fat diet rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals
  • Avoid smoking
  • Limited consumption of alcohol
  • Regular exercise
  • Healthy weight
