Colon polyps are cell over growths on the inside of the colon or large intestine.
Causes
Causes are not clear but the risk factors include:
- Smoking
- Alcohol consumption
- Age over 40
- Heredity
- Obesity
- Diet high on fat
Symptoms
Symptoms are not present most of the times. When present they include:
- Rectal bleeding
- Bloody stools
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
Treatment
Treatment consists of removal of polyps as there is a risk of them turning malignant.removal can be done by:
- Polypectomy: This includes snaring the overgrowths with help of a wire loop which cuts and cauterizes through electric current at the same time to prevent bleeding.
- Surgery: This is required in case of large polyps or when polyps cannot be reached safely. It can be done by open or laparoscopic methods.
Prevention
- Avoid excessive alcohol
- Avoid smoking
- Eat a balanced diet
- Maintain a healthy weight
