Colon polyps are cell over growths on the inside of the colon or large intestine.

Causes
Causes are not clear but the risk factors include:

• Smoking
• Alcohol consumption
• Age over 40
• Heredity
• Obesity
• Diet high on fat

Symptoms
Symptoms are not present most of the times. When present they include:

• Rectal bleeding
• Bloody stools
• Constipation or diarrhea
• Abdominal pain

Treatment
Treatment consists of removal of polyps as there is a risk of them turning malignant.removal can be done by:

• Polypectomy: This includes snaring the overgrowths with help of a wire loop which cuts and cauterizes through electric current at the same time to prevent bleeding.
• Surgery: This is required in case of large polyps or when polyps cannot be reached safely. It can be done by open or laparoscopic methods.

Prevention

• Avoid excessive alcohol
• Avoid smoking
• Eat a balanced diet
• Maintain a healthy weight
