Cervicitis

 

Cervicitis is swelling and inflammation of the cervix which connects the uterus and the vagina.

Causes

  • Infection
  • Injury
  • Irritation from chemicals, contraceptives etc
  • STDs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes etc

Symptoms
Mild cervicitis is usually asymptomatic. Symptoms include:

  • Pronounced vaginal discharge after periods
  • Bleeding between periods or after intercourse
  • Vaginal itching or irritation
  • Painful intercourse
  • Burning during urination
  • Lower back or abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Fever

Treatment

  • Antibiotics and antiviral medications to fight infections
  • Electrocoagulation to burn of the affected tissue
  • Cryotherapy to freeze the affected tissue
  • Laser treatment to destroy the affected tissue

Prevention

  • Monogamy
  • Using condoms during intercourse
  • Avoiding chemical irritants
  • Following proper hygiene while inserting foreign objects like tampons, diaphragms etc.
  • Getting vaginal infections treated promptly
