Cellulitis

 

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection below the surface of the skin.

Causes 

  • Bacteria especially staphylococcus  and streptococcus
  • Broken skin
  • Dry skin
  • Diabetes
  • Poor circulation
  • Recurrent fungal infection
  • Blisters or wounds
  • Insect bites

Symptoms

  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Fever

Treatment

  • Oral antibiotics
  • Intravenous antibiotics in severe cases

Prevention

  • Keeping wounds or breaks in the skin clean
  • Prompt changing of dirty or wet bandages
  • Keeping dry skin moisturized to avoid breaking
  • Treating fungal or other infections of the skin promptly
