Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

 

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition where the median nerve going from the forearm to the palm gets compressed at the wrist.

Causes

  • Swelling or inflammation of the ligaments and tendons in the carpal tunnel
  • Repetitive movements of the wrist
  • Stress
  • Trauma
  • Pregnancy
  • Heredity
  • Certain health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, hypothyroidism etc
  • Unknown causes

Symptoms

  • Numbness or tingling in the fingers or palm
  • Burning pain in the wrist or palm
  • Increased symptoms while sleeping
  • Weak grip
  • Loss of sensation in the fingers

Treatment

  • Treatment of underlying condition causing CTS
  • Splints or braces for supporting and resting the wrist
  • Steroid injections to the wrist
  • Physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • Medication to reduce pain and swelling
  • Surgery to release pressure on the median nerve

Prevention

  • In case of repeated movements of the hands, make sure to rest the hand at regular intervals
  • Avoid bending and twisting the wrist too much
  • Proper ergonomics at work
  • Proper posture

  • Lose weight if you're overweight.
  • Get treatment for any disease you have that may cause carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • If you do the same tasks with your hands over and over, try not to bend, extend or twist your hands for long periods.
  • Don't work with your arms too close or too far from your body.
  • Don't rest your wrists on hard surfaces for long periods.
  • Switch hands during work tasks.
  • Make sure your tools aren't too big for your hands.
  • Take regular breaks from repeated hand movements to give your hands and wrists time to rest.
  • Don't sit or stand in the same position all day.
  • If you use a keyboard a lot, adjust the height of your chair so that your forearms are level with your keyboard and you don't have to flex your wrists to type.
