Candidiasis

 

Candidiasis is a fungal infection of the skin or the mucous membrane of the mouth, respiratory tract, vagina or penis and rarely the blood stream.

Causes

  • Fungus of the Candida species
  • Excessive use of antibiotics
  • Steroids
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Weak immune system
  • Diabetes

Symptoms
Symptoms depend on the place affected. They may include:

  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Whitish discharge
  • White patches on the tongue or the palate
  • Rashes
  • Inflammation of the head of the penis
  • Pain in swallowing
  • Fever and organ failure in case of infection in blood stream

Treatment

  • Topical antifungal creams, powders, lotions and pills
  • Antifungal liquids for mouth wash
  • Oral medication
  • Intravenous medication for infection of blood stream

Prevention

  • Maintain good oral health
  • Avoid sugars
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes
