Bursitis

 

 Bursitis is the inflammation of bursae which are fluid filled sacs responsible for smooth gliding of muscles and tendons over the bones at the joints in the body.

Causes

  • Repetitive movement or overuse
  • Excessive pressure
  • Trauma or injury
  • Certain health conditions like arthritis
  • Infection

Symptoms

  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling and tenderness
  • Sometimes, redness

Treatment
If the bursa is not infected, treatment includes:

  • Resting, icing and nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs
  • Aspiration with the help of a needle and syringe
  • Corticosteroid injections

In case of infection:

  • Antibiotics
  • Surgical drainage or removal of the bursa

Prevention

  • Appropriate warm up before strenuous physical activities
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Cushioning the joints when working on hard surfaces
  • Avoiding overuse by resting the joint adequately
